BACHATA
Bachata: a conversation that begins with comfortable steps
Bachata's appeal lies less in a single spectacular move than in the flow created by listening to the music and your partner. Whether you want to learn the basics or review your social dance practice, we can discuss classes suited to your goals.
Class & program enquiries ↗Connect the dance you love watching with the dance you want to learn
Upper-body movements and turns often catch your eye first in short videos. When learning, however, stepping and stopping with the music form the foundation for connecting movements. If you have a favourite video, tell us what appeals to you about it.
Bachata includes many styles and forms of expression. Your choice may depend on whether you feel comfortable with close partner work or would prefer to focus on rhythms and steps you can practise alone. We can discuss your preferred boundaries in advance.
Start with the rhythm of your feet, not large hip movements
Begin by keeping a steady beat while noticing the direction of your steps and which foot carries your weight. Rather than exaggerating upper-body and hip shapes, start with small steps that help you stay with the music.
When dancing with a partner, first agree on a comfortable handhold and distance. Leaning movements and large upper-body actions require more preparation than basic steps. It is better to agree together on the size of the movements and the extent of physical contact as you progress.
Outside class, repeat short sequences with a clear focus
You do not need a large space or a long routine to practise at home. Clear the area around you, repeat one basic step slowly and notice whether you are listening to the music as you change feet. Replaying a memorised sequence quickly is different from practising in time with the music.

Does bachata always involve dancing very close together?
Partner distance and forms of expression vary. If contact or a particular movement makes you uncomfortable, please mention it when enquiring. We can start by discussing basic steps within boundaries you feel comfortable with.
Can I start salsa and bachata together?
You can enquire about both, but you will need time to distinguish their rhythms and basic steps. Discuss whether to begin with one style based on how often you can practise and the music you prefer.
Can I take private lessons without partner-dance experience?
We will check whether private lessons are available. Discuss which areas you can prepare alone—such as listening to the music, basic steps and your preferred style—and which require partner practice.
