LATIN & BALLROOM

Dancesport: take it step by step, starting with one style

If you love the music but are unsure which dance to try, first tell us the atmosphere you enjoy and why you want to learn. SWAYDANCE discusses introductory Latin and ballroom dance, as well as private lesson options for experienced dancers.

Latin or ballroom: which should you learn first?

Latin dances include rumba, cha-cha-cha, samba, jive and paso doble; ballroom dances include waltz, tango, Viennese waltz, foxtrot and quickstep. Rather than memorising every name, bring one piece of music or a dance video you enjoy to help with your first enquiry.

Narrow down your interests by considering whether you prefer moving to a gentle song or enjoying clear rhythms and quick footwork. Rather than learning several dances at once, we recommend allowing time to repeat basic steps and rhythms.

Before partnering, learn the beat and weight transfer

In your first practice, noticing which foot supports your weight matters more than making many steps. Practising walking and stopping to the beat with a small stride gives you a reference point when learning movement sequences.

When dancing together, focus on maintaining your own balance rather than pulling your partner into motion. Explore a comfortable distance and direction of travel instead of simply copying hand and arm positions. Partner-class arrangements are explained after checking how you plan to participate and the current schedule.

Preparing for your first class and the practice that follows

Bring comfortable clothing that lets you bend and raise your arms, along with indoor shoes. You can decide whether specialist dance shoes are needed after consultation. Before choosing high heels or shoes that grip the floor strongly, check which footwear suits the class space.

A practice note can be as simple as one basic step you learned and one rhythm you found confusing, rather than a long routine. Tell us your preferred location—Jamsil–Songpa, Seocho or Seodaemun—your experience and the dance that interests you, and we will check class arrangements, instructor schedules, formats and fees.

Check your preferred location and schedule

Tell us your preferred location—Jamsil–Songpa ART SPACE, Seocho ART CENTER or Seodaemun ART HALL—and available days and times. Class arrangements, instructor schedules and fees are provided after consultation.

Frequently asked questions for first-time enquiries

Can I enquire about dancesport without a partner?

Yes. Please first tell us that you plan to attend alone. Individual fundamentals and partner classes use different formats, so we will check possible arrangements for your preferred dance and the current schedule.

Is waltz or jive better for beginners?

No single dance is necessarily easier for every beginner. Choose based on the music you enjoy, the movements you want to learn and your previous experience. You are welcome to send a video that interests you when enquiring.

Can seniors start as complete beginners?

Age alone does not need to determine whether you begin. Tell us your usual activity level and the range in which you can move comfortably so we can discuss pace and class format. Please also mention any movements or positions that cause discomfort.
